Greetings to the Organizers of the Linux Fest!
My DREAM is for the Visually Impaired to have access to
the wealth of knowledge available in written form on the internet, and for them
to enhance their humanity by being able to read, write, and publish.
• I and my Electronics Engineering and my Computer
Engineering students have done 5 years of research on a Vector Linux-Based
Braille system that is able to perform all these functions.
• It has an added feature that ONE mid-range PC,
would "serve" FIVE stations, each having a set of Keyboard &
Refreshable Braille Display combination.
• An "interface hardware box" is
attached to the PC's printer port.
• The five stations are also plugged into this
Box.
• Thus, one computer, SIMULTANEOUSLY, serves
o one
sighted person through the PC's normal keyboard/monitor combination
o PLUS
five stations for the Visually Impaired.
I have built a "site"
(http://braille.thcal.com) that will provide OPEN SOURCE materials for FREE to
anyone anywhere in the world to build their own Braille Literacy Tool.
• By DESIGN, the whole system is built around
affordable and readily available components, needing mid-level programming and
mid-level technician skills
• These materials will include hardware schematic
diagrams and software.
• All hardware components are affordable, and are
readily available in such stores as RadioShack, Jameco, Lowes, and similar
stores around the world.
• Software is written in simple C-Language codes,
within Vector Linux.
What is needed now is an organization that will sponsor
the project, and make it happen.
The business side of it is as follows:
• Not everyone will have the time, the skills, the
desire, or the resources to build the system themselves.
• The sponsor organization will sell and ship the
finished product.
• Anyone else who manufactures the system for
profit will remit a specific percentage of the gross sales to the sponsor
organization.
Do you think I should prepare a presentation to the Linux
Fest?
Thank you very much,
Tristan H Calasanz
