An extra point about dark background : font anti-aliasing is done without
gamma correction. That makes dark-on-white characters thicker than expected
and light-on-dark thinner. All hinting and rendering is tweaked accordingly,
usually with black-on-white as a reference. On CRT screens, that can make
small fonts hard to read when ligght-on-dark.
