Using infile options, such as:
ffmpeg -f dnxhd -r 29.97 -s 1920x1080 -i DNxHD_120_V01_orig.mxf -an -vframes 100
test.avi
gives me the same result as the essence only:
[dnxhd @ 0x288c7d0] error in header
Error while decoding stream #0.0
(message repeated many times)

FYI:
The original was digitized on Avid Media Composer 4.0.3 with an Avid Adrenaline
DNA. I follow the same procedure for Avid DNxHD 36 and the files do decode. I
can provide more sample files if it will help.
