a requirement for texinfo itself? It works for all the tools we use, only
not with texi2dvi.
If backslashes are offocially to be escaped, then we should probably do
it, no matter how much a hassle it is.
If not, then people should probably use something more modern to produce
PDF, maybe from the HTML output or something, and in that case you have my
support for closing as wontfix.
