I don't know if it is defined by any standard, but using angle brackets is
a common method of delineating a URL in plain text and to allow the link
to work with line breaks or word wrapping. I expect most mail clients,
browsers, or interfaces should be able to utilize these links properly.
I'm sorry it didn't work for you, but in this case it is my opinion that
the mail client should be blamed.
