Still digging... as a further comparison, using gstreamer, the following
pipeline produces about 8% cpu use for me on the pi0:
gst-launch-1.0 -v alsasrc device=hw:0 ! audio/x-raw, format=S16LE,
rate=48000 ! queue ! wavenc ! filesink location=out.wav
