FWIW, I finally sorted out the source of the problem: old versions of the
libavutil library (and the other ffmpeg libraries) that had somehow
polluted the /usr/lib directory.
Once I deleted those old libraries, all the av_calloc errors disappeared,
and openshot works now.
It took a bit of poking around, but that's really all it took to correct
the whole problem.
