But I am currently using Avisynth to do the down-conversion and the result is
really good, and Avisynth is only 8 bit, so it shouldn't matter that the
colormatrix filter only works in 8 bit?
This is the Avisynth script I currently use, for reference, to get good results:
QTInput("HD_BARS.mov", quality=100, audio=2)
ColorMatrix(mode="Rec.709->Rec.601", clamp=0)
Spline36Resize(720, 576)
AssumeFPS(25, 1, false)
ResampleAudio(48000
