Technically, it is a protocol option, and must therefore be placed before
the corresponding use of the protocol: before the -i if the protocol is used
for input, but after -i and before the corresponding output for protocols
used as output.

Probably because it has not reached it yet: opening the input fails, parsing
the options for the output has not been processed.
