I uninstalled the macports ffmpeg and installed from source at the ffmpeg website. now my ffprobe version is ffprobe version 3.0.2 Copyright (c) 2007-2016 the FFmpeg developers I have no idea why the macports installation for ffprobe is so out of date. That old version must have been broken with the mac 10.11 update. With this new installation everything is working. Thanks for the help
