I tried the two commands, they do produce valid WMP videos with no sound.

This is unexpected.
Could you test the following command lines?
$ ffmpeg -f lavfi -i testsrc -pix_fmt yuv420p -t 10 out1.mp4 $ ffmpeg -f lavfi 
-i testsrc,transpose=1 -pix_fmt yuv420p -t 10 out2.mp4
