Just to make sure there is no misunderstanding:
2.8.8 is old and mostly unmaintained (except for security issues),
it does contain known bugs that are fixed in current FFmpeg and
is therefore not supported on this mailing list.
There is nothing unstable about current FFmpeg.
(Current FFmpeg may not be compatible with some applications
that use its libraries which is why Gentoo did not update yet, note
that both Debian and Ubuntu cannot reproduce this issue.)
