Definitely defined in some (!) standard. (Our mpegts muxer does not comply to any standard iirc, so please understand the difference between defined and conforming.) >or even h265. What's wrong with mkv? As said above, mpegts muxed with FFmpeg may not be a good idea unless you know what you are doing.
