While ffmpeg is quite useful, there are better free players than ffplay* (often built on the ffmpeg libs). And for some purposes, there are better open-source info tools than ffprobe.

I hadn't noticed mplayer leaking memory but then I haven't used it for a few years.

Find the best tool for the job, and all that.
