I'm using real time stream from a webcam...seems to work okay if I have ffmpeg and ffserver running on the same machine, but I need to have them separate as I only have limited bandwidth on the machine with the webcam.
If bandwidth is the only issue, you could stream a stream. My camera is on one box and streams (via VLC) to a second box which has both ffmpeg and ffserver on it. I only have one client for the output of ffserver, though. But it is handling an incoming and an outgoing 19 MB/s stream without too many problems.
