Hey Lennart. I would suggest against any larger standardisation below /opt.... this is more or less the point of it, that people (especially proprietary vendors) can put things in their usual mess below it.
Things like saying vendors _should_ use a schema like: /opt/reverse.dns.name/product would make some sense though. Regarding the search paths: I personally always liked that any 3rd party stuff is per default _not_ searched, as I usually don't trust it. Of course you're right that this is problematic for things like DBus, udev rules etc. But IMHO the right solution here is using symlinks. Making many different locations searched by these frameworks, makes it even more difficult to understand what's going on. Cheers, Chris.
