I ran across a novel that describes Chinese silk culture in the 19th century on the village level. It has many details that I had not seen elsewhere in the popular literature on silk culture. It is also a sociological description of village life for women who decide not to marry. The title is The Moon Pearl by Ruthann Lum McCunn. It is a good read, maybe a little too pat in the end, but I did stay up until 12:30 to finish it. Probably suitable for teens.
