Dear Fiber-netters,

Speaking of language used by wool judges, etc. ... there is a page on our
website about wool judging (click on "Wool Shows"), with an extensive
glossary of words used in giving reasons in wool judging at the bottom of
the page. There is also a news letter about wool judging with photos ...
3rd letter, found in the news letter archive. The glossary was compiled
from CSU Extension pages and actual judges comments. Here are some of the
ones related to our discussion...

Break -The fibers are weak at a certain point, but strong above and below
the weak spot; opposed to
" tender", which signifies a generally weak fiber.

Soundness - freedom of the fiber from breaks and tenderness; relates to
strength.

Staple - (has two meanings) 1. The length of a lock of shorn wool. 2. The
longest length wools within a grade.

Tender - Wool that is weak and breaks anywhere along the length of the
fiber due to poor nutrition or sickness.

Our web address is in the signature below for any that want to read more.
