I had the same problem with take up on my DT wheel, using one SS drive band, and one cotton drive band. I found some surfboard wax (I'm in SoCal) and waxed the cotton drive band. That seems to have stopped the slipping problem. At least I think that's why I couldn't get take up and would watch the twist build up, and up, and up in a length of yarn, before the take up would do what it's supposed to do.
