All,

VERBOSE: ON

I spun up some kid mohair, a couple of years ago. I dyed it fabulous shades
(if I do say so myself <g>) of blue, yellow, deep corals and all shades in
between. I'd combed it. So I had nice thin singles, then I decided to spin
up the combings, because I thought it would make an interesting designer
yarn. I wound up plying the two singles together. Then I was going to make
the beret that someone mentioned on this list. I like the looks so well, I
decided it would be wasted on a beret, frogged what I'd done, and went for
socks. I used both ends of the ball, knitting a sock from each end. Neither
sock looks like the other, but they match, if that makes any sense. I've
completed the heel, and am in the boring process of just knitting until I
get to the toes.

Alas, I was overly optimistic on my yarn supply. I'm running out of yarn.

I had a ball of really skinny plied yarn, from the same batch of dyed
mohair. I had some unspun mohair, that was mostly coral, with all the
shades in between. I spun up the coral mohair, and plied it with the
already plied dyed mohair.

I could have sworn that I read somewhere, sometime on this list, that it
was possible to ply a singles yarn with an already plied yarn. I tried
that. It didn't seem to work for me. At least, I didn't get a yarn that I
thought I was going to get.

I got a yarn that's really interesting to look at. I'm not unhappy with it
at all. The already plied yarn wrapped around the single in a strange
pattern: there's three wraps very close together, then a space of about .25
-.5", where the single show thru, then 3 wraps very close together, etc. I
think the space will felt up, since it's going to be used from the heel
down.

Is this the way it's supposed to ply? Did I imagine reading about being
able to ply a single with an already double plied yarn? Am I losing it?
