Hi All,
I don't want to beat this issue to death, but just for
the record - even though the FMD topic may not appear
to be directly related to a fiber list, I am glad to
see it show up here. We live in a global community
that is shrinking by the hour and what happens
'elsewhere' potentially affects all of us ...wherever
we may be. If you are a spinner of fleece, you have
to obtain that fleece from somewhere. At some point -
no matter how many intermediaries were involved, an
animal was a part of that fleece (or vice versa). If
you are not aware of potential problems, particularly
with a disease as contagious as FMD, you could
potentially accidentally transmit the disease to some
unsuspecting flock - simply due to lack of awareness.
If you travel, or import fleeces (even only one) you
could be an unlucky link in a chain of circumstances
that could result in dire consequences for many
livestock owners. Believe me, you do not want anyone
to experience the heartache that accompanies massive
slaughter of animals to eradicate a problem that could
have been prevented with a little foresight and
consideration. I believe in common sense - not
paranoia. But in order to exercise common sense, you
must be informed.

And now I descend from the soapbox... Debra Taylor, DVM
