I took a workshop with Norman Kennedy a couple of years ago.  A couple of
points you asked about.  He had me slow my wheel way down (much larger
pulley) and increase the take-up.  Some spread the fiber into the gauze
when using a distaff and others tie the strick to the top of a pole.  There
is also something called a comb distaff with a series of three toothed
areas cut into the wood.  You start at the highest and gradually lower the
strick as the longer fibers are spun out.   OTOH the Linders suggested
wrapping the entire strick in a terry cloth towel and using that as a
"distaff".  This was after they went through the whole deal of dressing all
the different kinds of distaffs.
