You're not entirely off base.
Think of those "fur blend" sweaters 80% lambswool, 20% angora or rabbit
fur - after the fur falls out - all you have left is the lambswool.
I DO find that the hair fibers tend to slip a bit - case in point the hippie
sweaters out of alpaca and llama yarn.
They not only stretch over time, the holes just seem to open up as if by
magic.
Using some extra nice fine wool merino to even out the carded batt and yarn
produced IS nice. That's why it is hard to ever find pure angora or mohair
yarn in shops. Mixed with some wool, it just makes for a better yarn
product.
