I've used singles that were fingering, sport and "worsted" weight, knitting up at 8-9, 6, and 4-5 sts per inch. They seem to be wearing well - had two pair for over 4 yrs and a friend has some that are two years old. I do not wear my socks with sandals - which wears them faster. Sent a Wensleydale pair to my cousin and she's worn them backpcking for two years......in heavy boots.
I've done some from "Interlacements" roving - don't know the ilk of that but it's wonderful stuff with great colors, Jacob, Lincoln and Lincoln lamb, Coopworth, Wensleydale, Mohair, Corridale and some mixed "spinners flock" wool. Haven't noticed any being better than others but I'm really not hard on my socks. I wear socks daily summer and winter in the Arizona desert with my orthopedic tennies. I do tend to prefer spinning singles from wool with a little more crimp - ie Corri and Jacob, rather than the wavy kind as they are "lighter" and have more bounce, which I prefer to knit with. Technically these would be softer wools and shouldn't wear as well, but I haven't had any problem.
