I've published a couple books about dog training, not fibre
interests, so my experience may not be relevant.

I make more money if someone buys a book from me. If they buy it
from the distributor, I get a small portion of that money which is
figured into the wholesale cost of that book. If I sell the book
myself, I pay the wholesale price (which also covers the cost of
printing and all that stuff) and sell at the retail price, which is
usually at least twice as much as the wholesale price.

I am, however, extremely grateful whenever anyone buys one of my
books no matter who they purchase it from. The advantage of having a
distributor versus selling it myself is that the distributor reaches
a much greater number of customers than I can myself. If 100 people
who have never heard of my web site buy my book from the distributor
I make more money because those people would never have bought the
book from me. Additionally, the more copies of my books that are out
there, the more well known I become, which leads to good things like
more seminar invitations and more people coming to me for instruction.

Plus the number of copies sold is a real ego boost, which I enjoy
(I'm pathetic, I know it! <G>).

Things may work differently in the fibre world.
