You can use the same method for degumming your yarn. As to stink, I've only been up close to this procedure at workshops which were held in large rooms. However, even getting near the pot, I never noticed an odor and I'm usually very sensitive to smells. I think keeping it under water is what will save you (and the horses). For good measure, I suppose you could use a crockpot or a pot with a lid on - you're only using soap probably, not dye, so there would not be any contamination of the vessel.
