My two cents on headbands...

I saw a very pretty headband at my local yarn store made with
a wool/angora blend yarn. The part of the band that would go on the
back of the neck was knitted in garter stitch and was narrower
(about 1"-1.5" wide) than the part that would go over the ears and on
top of the head (about 2.5" wide). As the band gets wider whoever
knitted the band changed stitches in the center and added a cable
pattern in the center. I already knit and crochet headbands to wear
in the summer to keep my hair off my face and I am planning to knit
one with a few balls of dark brown wool/angora yarn I have. Probably
will put some kind of cable in the center perhaps the XOXOX. I find
it a nice way to keep my ears warm in winter but avoid the usual hat
head I get whenever I wear a hat.
