"glad the socks in question will be display only, but still embarassed at their visible poor quality"
Didn't you say the socks were recreations of WW? socks for army? (or?) ? I talked to a fellow who created some fabric for Civil War blankets that were to be as much like the originals as possible. In that case it ment using recycled and poor quality wool and the resulting fabric was of "poor" but more authentic quality. Don't know if that is the case with those socks or not.... It does make you think a bit about what life was like before synthetics became available.... not everyone could afford good quality wool and the lower quality stuff was sometimes so bad(or inapropriately used as in carpet grades used for garments) that there are still people who think they are allergic to wool.
