Hi,

My wheel is set up in double drive. It occasionally has jerky take up.
I will give the singles a little bit of slack, but they don't go onto the
bobbin (doubles back on itself instead). Suddenly, there will be a bit of
a jerk and everything flies onto the bobbin and tugs through my fingers.

It's been my experience with my wheel that when this happens I need to reset the aggressiveness of the draw in just a twitch. When I spin extremely finely this is an adjustment for long draw that is so fine that I've gone to putting on a brake band in fine monofilament and putting a rubber band on the end for additional elasticity. This spreads the adjustment over a much greater distance and allows for finer adjustments much more easily than the instant yes/no of cotton or even linen brake bands. I won't even comment on cotton bbs with metal springs.

I am using a cotton drive band, and I checked to ensure that the bobbin
whorl is smaller than the ratio whorl. This jerky take up does not always
occur, sometimes it works smooth as silk. Does anyone know what causes
this?

Sometimes this also indicates the fill capacity of the bobbin. Another factor can be extreme uneveness of the buildup on the bobbin too (likely this isn't your problem, but it can be a factor for other spinners who don't build up even, small layers vs. big 'mountains' of fiber from one hook to another).

If you're on a double drive rather than a system with a brake band, then or course the first paragraph above doesn't apply to your wheel.
