I've knit an Aran for my husband with Schachenmayr Universa(+Merino). 
Schachenmayr is a german brand - don't know if you're able to get tihs 
yarn. It's sport weight but very light, much yardage to 50g.
Which one of Gladys Thompsons Arans do you want to knit?
