Barbara, Shetlands fit your criteria to the letter, including a nice variety of fleeces--both texture and color :) Linda Doane was the first to import Shetlands into the US, and she's in VT, hopefully not too far from you to go visit. Her website is <http://www.mrsf.com/> You probably will find primarily finewooled Shetlands at her place, but she can get you started with other Shetland breeders in the NE, some of whom will have medium fleece or double coated fleece types.
