Some months ago I connected with Mika Laiho who is a Finnish person working with an originally FInnish-government-financed handicraft project in the Mongolian countryside, trying to employ local people in here. One specialty they have been working on is yak winter hair.

We experimented with my ordering some of the down to be sent to me in Sweden, but there were some technical difficulties in getting my money to her without paying big fees to the banks involved.

In the interval Mika sent me a box of the hand-carded Yak down, and you can take my word that it is gorgeous and wonderfully soft. Mika recommends blending it with some wool when spinning to give some added strength to the yarn. Highly Recommended!

The financial difficulties have been worked out now, and you can order the Yak plus some neat-looking handcrafts direct from Mongolia using a VISA card or from eBay using the payment method of your choice. PayPal is also available as a payment method.

To order direct go to http://www.mongolisshop.net and just follow the directions. When you want to place the order you will be switched over to the Kahn Bank's web pages where you can pay with a VISA card on a secure web site just as you would in the US or Europe or wherever*. The site has both English and Russian instructions. Mongolia was once part of the USSR, but is now an independent republic with English as the official international language.

The eBay store site is at http://stores.ebay.com/MongoliaShop

The usual disclaimer from me that I have no financial interest in Mongolia Shop - just passing along some interesting information. My initial connection with Mika was when she e-mailed me about finding a source of inexpensive carding cloth. You may remember my asking about sources on FiberNet.

*(from above) If you are concerned about using a credit card on line, check with your card issuer to see if you can use a one-time number for ordering on line (in Mongolia or New Jersey or anywhere) My VISA provider will give me a temporary number on line. I use the temp numbers for all my on-line purchases. My card provider is the giant MBNA in Delaware, USA. Susanne's and my Swedish banks have similar arrangements. Your card issuer probably does too.
