Faroese-style shawls from Myrna Stahman's book _Stahman's Shawls and
Scarves_ would be a great quick-on quick-off solution, but you would
probably have to adjust the size because most of them are quite generously
proportioned. I LOVE mine - I did the "Gracie" pattern (well, I sorta had
to, being as how Grace is my name!) in Koigu (vareigated turquoise) - and
the long ends are just great for either tucking into a belt to keep it on,
or crossing to tie in back for additional warmth and staying on.

For what you describe, I think I'd recommend taking a look in XRX's
(Knitters magazine's) compendium of shawls (and maybe scarves?). I
distinctly remember there being a smallish version of the "more than
circular" shawl, which when folded in half is, because of its
more-than-circular shaping and the drape that this causes, is supposed to
stay on the shoulders without slipping off. Also, you might look into ... I
think it's Fiber Trends? yes, it is - the Landscape Shawl has a Scarf
version that sounds like it might work for you. (I highly recommend the
shawl, by the way; I did mine in that INCREDIBLE vareigated merino ribbon -
yes, really - from Moutain Colors. Wow.)

Obviously, there are more options out there than you'll ever knit. Have fun
digging through them all!

Grace
