<<I was thinking that a shawl might be good, since I don't have to wriggle in and out of the sleeves. If I am walking around, I would like to be able to throw it off my shoulders and keep going. >>
I have made many of these in many sizes, for myself and friends and family. I almost always make mine by starting in the middle of the long side of a right triangle (cast on three stitches, increase once at the beginning of every round, and then increase on either side of the center stitch on every other round.) That way you're not committed any particular size (I'm not much for planning ahead.) You can use all garter stitch, or all stockinette, and fill in with lace stitches (I use a lot of Gull Wings, Cat's Paw, and Feather and Fan.)
The Stahman book is great if you don't want to do your own patterns. Elizabeth Zimmermann also had several wonderful ideas/patterns - Pi Are Square, Stonington shawl, etc. Check all of her books (as well as Meg's).
