What about one of Elizabeth Zimmermann's Pi are Square shawls, from Knitting Around? It doesn't have long points in front to deal with, and it can be as plain or lacy/patterned as you want.

I've wanted one for a long time, but the Internet would probably have to break down for me to get around to it... :-/
(Ummm, I'd probably get around to a LOT of stuff if that happened!)

I was thinking that a shawl might be good, since I
don't have to wriggle in and out of the sleeves. If I
am walking around, I would like to be able to throw it
off my shoulders and keep going. It doesn't have to
go below waist level and shouldn't require a fastener.

Would a Faroese shawl work for this - they are so
beautiful. I also thought that a long narrow stole
that crushes easily would be easy to slip down and
pull up. Probably no fringes to get in the way. Any
ideas for a good design?
