Hi Merry
My hands-down favorite shape for staying on, easy on and off, is a
semi-circle. Have a look at Martha Waterman's Traditional Knitted
Lace Shawls book. I've made several of these, kept a few and gifted
some. Since they are knitted from the top down I never worry about
running out of yarn, and the increase intervals allow you to design
using any variety of lace or pattern motifs without doing strenuous
math.
