I haven't seen an actual chart, in part because everyone wraps a little
differently. However, Interweave Press' Homespun, Handknit gives wpi
for the yarns used in their patterns. From that, I've extracted the
following equivalents that work for me:
18 wpi = fingering weight (gauge of about 8 sts per inch)
16 wpi = sport weight (gauge of about 6 sts per inch)
14 wpi = double knitting weight (gauge of about 5-6 sts per inch)
12 wpi = worsted weight (gauge of about of about 4-5 sts per inch)
Finer is laceweight, larger is bulky--very large categories! :)
I've noticed there's been 'gauge creep' going on over the last few
years. Knitting worsted, for example, is used more at 4 sts to the inch
than the 5 it used to be, and with larger needles.
Holly
who, today, likes fingering weight for most purposes--but used to circle
the gauges of patterns and avoided anything with more stitches than 5 to
the inch :)
