The pomegranate report from Sweden is that of the three supermarkets
in my nearby shopping center one had none, a second had little ones
(ca. 8 oz) for US $1.54/lb and the third had nice, big ones (ca. a
pound) for US $1.11/lb. Seems like to prices in Walla Walla are a
ripoff.
In the mid 1950s there were thousands of pomegranate trees growing
along roads in California's southern San Joaquin Valley table-grape
fields. The trees had been planted as windbreaks, and at that time at
least the fruit was not commercially harvested, and free for the
picking.
Oh, the pomegranate Susanne and I shared last night was delicious. I
don't think the edible parts were red enough to make much of a dye
pot. Origin: Turkey. One imagines that Voltaire's Candide, Cunegund
and the rest of the fellow adventurers ate pomegranates along with
their preserved citron and pistachios.
