They are also known as a group (roughly) as meat breeds and dual purpose (meaning, respectively, they are bred for their meat, not wool, and bred for both meat and wool.)


The groupings and their names vary considerably according to who's doing the grouping - USDA, US Wool Council, British Wool Marketing Board, various rare breed societies, spinners' groups, etc. They changed greatly in the second half of the 20c especially, partially because of the popularity o f handspinning, and cross breeding that went on for handspinners.

Keep in mind, the breeds change greatly over the years as well -
