Hi Fibernetters,

Llama fiber runs the gamit of super slippery, fine to coarse, short to long
and very clean to awful, awful dirty.

The single coated animals produce a wonderful spinning yarn. The double
coated, heavy guard hair animals produce
a ropey, harsh yarn. They do have a soft undercoat, which is wonderful,
after the guard hair is removed.

There are mills that offer dehairing, which removes the long, coarse guard
hair and vegetation. Regular carding will not
remove most of the vegetation, especially the pieces of hay, straw, and
burrs.

I've found that show animal owners will clean their fiber pretty well
before sending it to a processor. However, those that
have the animals as guard animals or pasture ornaments, don't do a very
good job of cleaning before sending the fiber for
processing.
