I have worked my way through all the synthetic oils like the bike oils and
now am back using a standard machine oil, ten in one or something, figuring
that the wheel is a machine, and I saw nothing special about that other
stuff. Yes it turns black after a while and I wipe it off and reoil.
I live in SE Michigan, but I bet the difference is that I do a lot of
spinning. (My living room is relatively clean.)
I also use some white grease in the wheel and treadle bearings.
