Well, I had a very unexpected, but pleasant surprise in the barn this
morning: twin lambs!
I usually turn my ram in with the ewes early to mid-August for
January/February lambs. I was getting a late start this year because
the ram that I wanted to use wasn't quite in condition. I put two ewes
in with him last week and they just weren't really interested. "Okay,"
I thought, "just haven't got the right day in their estrus cycle.
We'll try again."
Well, being very pregnant about about to lamb would be a good reason!
This ewe had twinned for me mid-January. And here we are in September
and she twinned for me again - a white ram and a black ewe. Having
lambs right now in the barn is WAY better that in wet, muddy and cold
January/February. I'd love to get everyone on this cycle! (Having
winter lambs was never an issue with my very durable Black Welsh
Mountain sheep. But, I noticed a big difference in the way the merinos
handle it.)
