Hello everyone. First, I should introduce myself - Jennifer Horsman from
Fort Collins, Colorado. I joined a few weeks ago, but I've been lurking
and reading the digest. What a great list this is! I took a spinning
class this August and got hooked, bought a Lendrum wheel, though I
really like the drop spindle too. I work for The Nature Conservancy, but
not for much longer because I'm going to finish my Master's degree.
Okay, now for the questions. When I bought my Lendrum foldable wheel,
the store owner also told me to buy some oil and showed me how to oil
the metal rod of the flyer where the spindle sits. When I got home and
started using the wheel and really checking it out, I noticed the bobbin
has a plastic lining - no metal inside at all. I would think there is no
need to oil the flyer if it is not going to have contact with metal. Is
this correct?
Another question, my Lendrum started squeaking. At first I thought it
was because I had decided to stop oiling the flyer, but the sound was
actually coming from somewhere around the center of the fly wheel where
the bearings are OR where the treadles are connected to the fly wheel. I
was told by the same shop owner that I do not need to oil the bearings
because they are self-contained. I did oil both of those rotation points
(bearings and connection point) and the squeaking stopped. Does anyone
on this list have a Lendrum? Has yours ever squeaked?
Finally, I am going to be in Christchurch, NZ in early November and
again in late December. I definitely want to check out a Majacraft wheel
and would like to know where some good fiber stores/sources are so
please tell me if you know!
Thanks,
Jennifer
