I just got a beautiful brown from butternuts. I soaked the whole nut, husk
attached until I got a nice color, strained the liquor and put in
unmordanted wool. You can do the same thing with black walnuts. I wish I
had pulled some of the yarn sooner so I would have had two shades. Next
time. My dye books said use the bark but I had collected the nuts away from
home so tried them anyway. FYI Confederate uniforms (American Civil War)
were dyed with butternuts.
