Carpet warp works in a pinch but won't last nearly as long as the original
material and it stretches.

Actually I'm trying out a band that a friend gave me. The material is supposed
to be for beading (I think it was called lacing tube). It is stretchy but
hollow and works like the old Chinese finger puzzles (where one foolishly
inserts one index finger in each end of a woven tube and then tries to pull
the fingers out). It's something she found at Wal-Mart in their crafts
section. From the stretchy tubing, we cut a length suitable for my wheel's
drive band. Included in the packet of tubing is a length of stiff round
plastic. We snipped off about a half-inch of this and pushed the tubing over
each end. It's been spinning for a year now and I've shortened the tubing
once ... I do take the tension off the drive band when not spinning. The
packet from Wal-Mart cost about US$4 (I think that's what she said) and has
plenty for several wheels, depending on the size of the wheel and if it's a
single or double drive wheel.
