It's spelled lanolin, and I will go along with a Wikipedia entry that also calls it wool wax, wool fat, or wool grease. Unscoured wool is called grease wool, and spinners who spin unscoured wool are said to spin in the grease. It's a mixture of esters of fatty acids

Lanolin isn't petroleum grease, but is sure as heck is grease in common language.
