With recent discussions on several lists regarding textiles being
eco-friendly or not, I'm passing along excerpts from an article on p. 3 of
the current "TextileForum" (2/2007) titles:
'It is Time for Change in the Textile and Clothing Industry'.
R(educing) I(mpact) of T(extiles) on the E(nvironment)
http://www.ritegroup.org
has set itself some highly ambitious goals:
"1. To develop methods of objectively assessing the 'greenness' of textile
production, processes, and products through a scoring/grading system,
developed through the Group, which consider full life cycle analysis
2. Develop clear, industry accepted, definitions of commonly used
green/sustainability terms
3. Promote and encourage the use of scientific facts in all
sustainability/green debates; provide a forum for, and promote
interdisciplinary discussion on, sustainability/green issues; educate
brands, retailers and manufacturers to understand what is FACT and what is
HYPE."
The RITE Group is based at the University of Leeds, UK.
