I'm sure not all llamas are covered in dirt at all times (ask a herd
owner <g>), but rolling in dust/dirt does seem to be a pretty common
thing among the camelids. For this reason, many spinners prefer to wash
the fiber first, because they'd rather not have that grit go through
their wheels.
But whether you wash before or after spinning, you should keep in mind
that camelid fiber tends to have little - or no - lanolin in it, so it's
not necessary, and probably not desireable, to use the very hot water
that works best for wool. The hot water is used to dissolve
grease/lanolin, and is wasted on fiber that doesn't have the stuff.
