Holly, I totally agree with you about hand coding, especially compared with any MS product or even the popular Dreamweaver or PageMill. Coding is easy and using style sheets makes it simpler still.
On the other hand, have you looked at the totally free WYSIWYG HTML editor Nvu? (I tend to look at software at times when I am avoiding housework <grin>.) Nvu is an open source program that is available for Windows and Linux and I think Mac. The code is much, much cleaner. I'm tempted to use Nvu instead of hand coding for the simple reason that when working on someone else's site, they usually send me their text in an MS Word formatted document. These documents include typographers quotes, apostrophes, m-dashes and n-dashes, just to name a few. Nvu recognizes them and converts the punctuation to code (“ … —, etc.) and I find that very appealing. Julie Owens
