Actually, nobody did -- the assertion in the book was that
already-colored yarn "does not take dye well", not "does not
take dye" -- and it *doesn't* take dye well, in the eyes of 
a professional dyer who is shooting for predictable colors 
that we moderns would call plain and boring.
